A conversation with Gus Capote

How did you get involved with 3D computer graphics?
Gus: My background is as a Civil Engineer, so AutoCAD was the first software I used and loved from the start. At that time my wife was studying Architecture and I thought I could help her with her the presentation of her projects; I teamed up with a very good friend that knew how to use AccuRender for AutoCAD and we started to play with 3D Studio (DOS). I have no Idea what I was doing at the beginning but the images came out quite good so I decided to work full time in architectural visualization.
What are some of the projects have you worked on?
Gus: I’ve worked on a large variety of architectural visualization projects, from images in planning applications to marketing films--including the Madrid 2012 Olympic Bid; the Barcelona 2003 FINA World Championships, and large scale developments worldwide. I’m also involved in educational projects with the University of la Laguna in Tenerife Spain and other schools teaching 3D.
As an Autodesk Master, for what do you use the 3D software? (For example, character rigging, modeling, texturing, lighting etc.)
Gus: I have done a bit of everything with 3ds Max since I started with 3DS DOS: modeling, texturing, animating, particles, lighting and rendering. Currently, I’m more focused on lighting but I usually can jump in any stage of a project. I have use Maya sometimes for character animation.
What makes this industry so exciting to you?
Gus: What I have found most exciting is the endless possibilities of our work. We have amazing tools that we can use to entertain and to visualize and communicate ideas and designs. There are no limits on what we can achieve through 3D.
Where do you see the industry going in the next five years?
Gus: We are in constant movement. The industry is evolving really fast and I think real time applications are going to catch up with the quality of photorealism; applications like augmented reality will become very common.
What words of wisdom do you have for anyone interested in entering the professional world of 3D computer graphics?
Gus: Passion and lots of patience, expend time studying art, photography and other areas that complement the technical part. This job is not just about the software. Learn the rules so you can break them when you need to. And more important share your work so you can get critical feedback and opinion that will help you to “raise your bar”.
