Hi folks -

I read studios2010 problem and it sounds like I have something similar.

I get to the startup screen and get “Failed to Initialize Stone & Wire. Press Escape.”

I have a student license and I might have a corrupted .db file. Just don’t know where .db files are on my computer.

Will post any info anyone needs to get this solved.

Here’s what the shell log says when I try to start it up:

Hi

Judging from the error messages, you problem doesn’t seem to be related to the .db files, but rather to the framestore map file which is automatically configured when you install Smoke.
Is your Mac getting its IP address and/or hostname over DHCP?

Have you tried rebooting your Mac? It is highly recommended to do this after an IP or hostname change. Otherwise, Stone+Wire may output the type of errors you’re seeing.

Can you please open a terminal and post the output of the following commands?
cat /usr/discreet/sw/cfg/sw_framestore_map
cat /usr/discreet/sw/cfg/sw_storage.cfg

Thanks!
Robert.

Hi guys.

Looks like the problem stems from the fact that your ISP gives your Mac a new hostname everytime your IP is renewed.
This confuses Stone+Wire and prevents Smoke from running.

The solution is to set a fixed hostname for your Mac.
Here’s how:

1. Open the Terminal from Applications/Utiltites, and type:
sudo scutil --set HostName <new host name>

2. Reboot your Mac.

Regards
Robert.

Hi Robert,

I’ve had the same problem as the guys but I’ve reset the hostname as you’ve noted and now Smoke can’t find the licence for the software.

Help!

Cheers,

Colin

Hi Colin.

Please open the License Server Selector app from /Applications/Autodesk/Smoke Common Utilities and tell me what value do you see there. The correct value for a local server should be “127.0.0.1”

If the value is correctly set to 127.0.0.1, then open the Service Monitor app from the same folder and check that the license server is running.

If the value in the Selector is not correct, please let me know and I’ll give you guidance on how to fix it.

Regards
Robert.

Hi Robert,

Checked the local server value and it’s 127.0.0.1. When I restart the licence server, it starts (green light) for about 10 seconds and then stops again.

I’ve also checked the licence configurator too and the server is set to 127.0.0.1 on the first line of the script i.e. the server name part.

Thanks again,

Colin

Hi Colin.

Thanks for checking the IP.
Now let’s take a look at the log, maybe we find some clues as to what goes wrong:
Open the Terminal app from Applications / Utilities and type:

cat /var/log/autodesk/adlm_flexnetserver.log

This will display the contents of the license server log file. Take a look at it and let me know if you find any error messages.

Regards,
robert.

There is a communications error (Status 37?) within the output file - does this help?

Not sure if you were able to get this fixed , but can you post the contents of /var/flexlm/autodesk.lic file , as well as /etc/hosts file , just curious to see why there is a “no such file or directory “ when adskflex starts .

Sachin

Hi Colin.

That’s an interesting error.

FlexLM documentation says that communication errors may occur when the components are not the same version. Did you install the current version of Smoke on top of an older installation? Maybe the license server components didn’t get updated properly. In this case, I would try reinstalling the latest version of Smoke.

Also, are you running any other software that uses FlexLM licensing? There have been cases of port conflicts.

Let’s also try another log file:

cat /var/log/Adlm.log

Regards,
Robert.

Hi Robert,

Sorry for the delay in replying, not been near my workstation fora couple of weeks.

I’ve tried the command and all that I get is “No such file or directory”. So, I’m now thinking of doing a clean re-install / install of the software. But before I do so, can you confirm if I should set my HostName to 127.0.0.1 or leave it as ‘macpro’ before I do the install (single network licence) and click the local workstation option on the install screen?

Thanks again,

Colin
