The details about Mudbox 2011 are out.

So what does everyone think of the update?
Whats your favorite new feature?
I personally like the sound of the ability to pose my models and the new color picker looks great.

The Pose feature has me very excited. I’ll be able to do much more in Mudbox and have to rely less on rigging in Maya. All I need to know is...when is it on sale? Gimme!

It’s a stunning release, kudos to the development team. Thanks for all your hard work!

Pose Tool that is awesome !
Blend modes for paint layers :)
YES! My Request (maybe it wasn’t mine) Mult-Layer PSD File Exchange :)
And turn table support
Although how does Vector Displacement compare with regular displacement ?
What is needed in 2012 is the ability to add clay on top of existing meshes to add geometry to the mesh & UV unfolding :), Mudbox may be behind Zbrush by a little but it can enhance on features and make it better.

Mudbox is actually not “behind” ZBrush, it’s just for different purpose. From the tools developed, Zbrush is intended to be a start-to-finish 2.5/3D concept/illustration/sculpting software, while Mudbox’s main functionality is to provide details (displacement/normal/bump/color/specular etc maps, or blendshape models) for other applications such as Maya,Max and XSI. Let me take an example.. For the huge features Zbrush provide, it still has no way no conveniently extract multi-tile 32 bit displacement maps from the models, compared to Mudbox which has it from the start.
On the Mudbox 2011 note, it seems to be a very solid release, and if all the tools work as intended ( no major crippling bugs), then Many users will start to consider it as their main sculpting/texturing apps, no doubt about it. What I like the most are the improvements on texturing tools, such as better PSD supports, layer blend mode, hue-saturation-contrast adjustments etc. Nicely done Mudbox teams!!

it seems like polygon reduction , hard surface sculpting tools , viewport enhancements (such as navigation cube ) etc will come with sp or with the other releases . also no sign of large file managements .
i wonder the precision of painting brushes . they were rough according to body paint in MB2010 .
nothing is mentioned about widgets or menus . if so we are still hugely dependant on shortcuts that slow down the workflow .
nothing new about selection tools ? selection region tool ?
lets see what demo has

I’m not sure what you mean by this—the precision of the texture paint brushes depends on the bit-depth of the texture—if you select a 16 bit/channel texture, the brush precision is 16 bit float per channel. If you select an 8 bit/channel texture, the brush precision will be only 8 bits per channel.
Or do you mean spatial precision vs color precision?

i mean the feel of brush . sensitivity . i cant control spray density with pen pressure easily
. this also occurs while painting with stencils .it someitmes causes jagged edges etc

As for stability issues , this recovery file used for promo purposes says a lot of things. sigh…
(image just saved from the Autodesk Mudbox 2011, promo page, sorry for the large image )

Mudbox does have its share of bugs, but to be fair, that is a screen cap from a *beta* version of 2011.
(the blurred out portion of the window caption says “El Dorado Beta 3”, El Dorado being the internal codename for 2011)

This made me laugh, and the rest of the character department had quite a chuckle too.
The new mud does appear to have some good improvements though.

If the tools work as intended. This will be the release that has me jump ship from Z-Brush.

Does anyone know if the 4K resolution limit is gone for 2011? This was a deal breaker for me using it.
Thanks in advance.

It can do textures larger than 4k—you just make an image that is the texture size you want and import it as a texture layer.

The maximum using this import trick will be 8k—this is a limitation of OpenGL.

Ah - thanks Ian. 8K is sufficient for my usual work so it will cover me off just fine.
