This is the situation; I created a lowpoly mesh in 3Ds max to lay out my landmarks for an enviroment. In Mudbox I subdivided this mesh lv 6 to get better resolution and start sculpting. After finishing my work I exported the a lv 3 mesh( lowpoly ) from Mudbox to 3Dsmax to start setting up my UVmap. Having done this I now want to import the baked mesh into Mudbox to start painting. The import is fine. Problem is when I start to raise my levels the UVmap seems to distort. I'm running 64bit windows7, core i7-2600k, 16gb ram, and a gtx580. I'm seeing lag at around level 8 using the base sphere. This is around 25 million polys. A brush size of around 10 is lagging when drawing on the surface. There's also some slight stuttering when zooming in and out. I have a question, I couldn't break down myself. In one of the Master class training Wayne describes a normal map technique. I don't know if there is more then just one, the only normal map technique I was able to extract was taking a normal map in photoshop and blending it with a AO map if I stand corrected, was there another one :) ? Wayne also talks about if you create a 2K map your sculpt should not be above 2 million polygons yet he describes 4 million polygons for a 4 million polygons sculpt ? A 4K map you should only sculpt at 4 million polygons, anything above 8 million polygons you should use multiple displacements. Softimage is a pain to join multiple UV maps together. I have a mesh with 5 subdivision levels; I export the level 3 mesh to Maya with the intention of adding a Normal Map to cover the rest of the detail. But Mudbox thinks otherwise. Mudbox will only let you export maps to a level 0 target mesh if you want to use the PTEX SETUP in Texel Distribution. I get the following error when I try to extract: "Use PTEX Setup" can only be selected if the target mesh is already set up for PTEX. Extraction works great though when the target mesh is at level 0. I don't understand why this is the case, and it is causing some headaches. Any chance this could be resolved? Any workarounds for this? I made sure there was no spacing in between When I sent it to Mudbox to paint and started painting, there seem to be some parts of the boat not being able to paint over. The diffuse map is an 8k png (which I forced into mud by scaling up the native 4k paint layer, since there's no options for > 4k). After working on it for a bit, I've noticed that most portions have been degrading with some strange stains/streeks (see attachments) and have no idea why this is. In two places I have seen YouTube videos where this has been accomplished using a selection under the Mesh menu and they have selected "creases and hard edges" to ad divisions to their work without rounding key areas of their work. I have looked and looked and have been unable to locate this tool in my version of Mudbox. Is this something that was developer only or Windows only? Please advise this would be a great tool especially when creating things that are more mechanically looking and less biologically looking. Currently trying to extract a map but for some reason on my model the "Extract" button is not active. I have tried another file and that works fine, i have tried to export the high and low polly meshes as obj files, re-importing and tried extrating the map that way, but the button is still not active. I have also tried importing the model into the file where the extract worked fine but the extract button remains inactive for this particular model.
