Is there any way to use any custom shapes and/or expressions beyond the generic “mouth open, whistle, corners up, corners down, etc” expressions and have them be driven by mocap markers? Using just the generic ones gives such bland and boring results.

Hey dude,
You won’t be able to create custom shapes that are supported by the mocap input. That only works with the preset default shapes. However , you can build your lib of shapes that will work with your mocap , meaning , you could have your corrective shapes as your lib of custom shapes and use those to override your mocap with. This way you can bypass the whole lib of presets.
Another way would be blendshapes but thats all geometry based .. no joints needed for that. Its been a while last time I did but you can get pretty good results with animating on top of mocap . As long as the mocap is stabilized well and its the right scale to get as close to your face then you can get very nice results. Maybe you should look into FaceRobot that allows you to create a lib of custom shapes that works with mocap.
Hope that helps.

Hey, woow this is an old post, but relevant to me :)

I think I have the same (or very similar) question, I need a motion capture based solution that drives my blendshapes. Can MotionBuilder do that? I’m desperately searching for a solution, but there is NONE…

I’d be happy to hear from you guys!
