Hi,

Now that MotionBuilder 2011 is available, I thought it would be good to have a thread where people can give us feedback on how they like it and what’s happening for them.

What would we like to hear? Things like:

* how do you like the release?
* are you having any problems?
* what would you like to see in the future?

Thanks,
Cory

Hi,

I Just installed motionbuilder 2011 and opened a project I’m working on with MoBu2010.
And well the first impression was that saving the file (16MB) take about 25secs!

Ok, further on. At the moment I do a lot of mocap data cleaning in MoBu.
So I resumed cleaning my marker data, fixing occlusions, swaps and so on.
When creating rigid bodies in the optical editor you see the curve of the selected rigid body
in the editor. OK, thats normal, but by selecting other RBs you see all this curves at the same time, all the curves at once! But that’s not all! Selecting a marker
brings up the x,y,z curves for this marker, on top of the RB curves! Damn! What a mess!

By switching to the Dopesheet/FCurves/Story or whatever window an then back to the Navigator window with the marker selected cleans the graph area and shows only the expeded curves. Seems like an refreshing bug.

And I have one special feature request for the optical editor:
swapping markers within a selected frame range would be nice.

Best regards
Sven

how long did the file take it 2010?

in 2010 it took not more than 4 secs!

& in 2011 it stucks at 59% for 20secs. In the status bar it says ‘Exporting relations for model: C3D:optical’

after you save the file in 2011, does it still open for that long?

Hi,

Loading the file in 2011 is fine.
Now I’m working on that file for a while in 2011 (the cleaning was done in MB2010 due to the opticalwindow redraw probs that occur in 2011 [graphic drivers are up to date]), I added an character and retrageted it and strangely the saving process suddenly goes way faster then saving the original file that contained only the optical data and an actor!

So I’m a bit confused!

To get to the bottom of it, I would be the best to make a new, fresh install of the OS.
But that’s not possible at the moment.

Best regards
Sven

Nah I dont think you should have to do that.  It takes the same extended insane amount of time for me to save a file in 2011 and it is less than ideal

I’ve also noticed that the amount of time MB 2011 takes to save a file has drastically increased in some instances, 3-4 minutes on a file that’s 40mb. It hangs around 59% like gotoxy says, the progress bar says “Exporting relations for KNLEManager”, whatever that is. The c3d data I’m working with isn’t terribly long either, it’s a little over a minute long @ 240hz.

I did a quick test and removed all the raw marker data, the actor, and anything else associated with it from the MB file, I also removed the original long take of mocap and just saved the file with a few shorter takes. This yielded almost instant-saves, so I guess I’ll work with a raw file saved separately.

I then brought the same c3d in MB 2009, recreated the actors and marker set, and had no save issues.. it was very quick.

Hope this helps,
-horse

Dear oh dear…

New animation layers look great. Just tried them and though the implementation looks nice but they are now unusable. This is particularly serious since it’s one of the most used features and it’s not available the old way.

On 2 separate attempts so far:

Attempt 1:
Successfully set some keys on a new layer with offset animation. Adjusted the weight of the curve, works nicely.
Tried to remove the layer, nothing happened.
Tried to duplicate the layer, animation offsets as you’d expect, no new layer created.
Repeated several times, animation offsets, no new layers are visible.

Looked in the fcurve window, which tells me that i am on layer13, Animation layer only has 2 layers visible. Maybe it’s a redraw issue? Shutting the window down and re-opening it should help right? Nope.

Attempt 2:
Setting a key on the second layer caused Motionbuilder to crash.

This is on Windows XP 64 bit, apparently compatible with the release. I’ll be lodging a case with Autodesk asap.

Interesting discovery. With Motionbuilder 2010 doing LIVE PHYSICS I could only crank up the SOLVER resolution to 3 or less and iteration to 150 or so. Above that and my laptop slowed to almost a stop. With 2011 I can now crank up LIVE PHYSICS resolution to 10 and above with super smooth performance. Particles and everything else runs much better. So, Iam really impressed.

Update:

I’ve had layering working on several attempts now. On one occasion deleting a layer crashed motionbuilder.

Maybe it’s just new install jitters :). I’ll be getting more feedback soon.

If you get the CER (Customer Error Report) Window popping up, please send in the details and we’ll be able to take a look at it.

Well unfortunately MoBu 2011 still eats half of processor on Windows 7 64bit. Maybe there some optimization for Win7 x64, but still this is big problem in work.

Hi, the CPU usage is link with the way MotionBuilder messaging system is done in order to be as fast as possible all the time. I am curious to know in which case this is a big problem for you, I guess its because you use multiple applications at the same time, in this case you can minimize MotionBuilder when switching to an other app as a workaround.
let me know,
thanks
Sylvain

For me it is one core just running the application doing nothing. If I open Word and have an open document it does not use any cycles. So why does MotionBuilder? On a laptop it really eats the battery.

Well… Why then there is no such “not big” problem in Windows XP?

By the way. Still it is very hard to set up actor via Python Script - because of constant data about actor position, scale and translation (functions always give default state). Is it normal? I think no.

It does seem slow to me… I have a new Corsair SSD drive and it still takes awhile.

I find the logic of MB a little hard to fathom sometimes. It seems designed for pipelines and scripting. I guess that’s the intended market.

For example, when you load in a new character or BVH file, it would be nice to be able to just wire the bones in; the drag and drop process is a little cumbersome. Just saving out a template can be a pain if you click the wrong setting when exporting.  Maybe some of the more commonly performed actions could be a little more automatic, like zeroing the rotation of a character to put him in a T-pose.

At the least, detailed tutorials and videos from Autodesk would be very helpful. I know training is part of the revenue stream of them/their partners, but some of their programs are so complex and daunting that there are probably a lot of fledgling users that just quit in frustration.

I have problem with the automatic reach T/R keys, dont like that, would like to be able to set it on/off or take it away completly

I would like to see a version for Mac OS X

an easy way to move around with your windows, to move away tabs from one window to a new or to another window

Better support opening older files so you dont have problems uppgrading from earlier version to the new one

I rather see that you realese an upgrade every second year, make the program less buggy when you realese it

I still prefer 2010, everything works and I have a good working flow whitin 2010

Hi,

Tried it on my system and this is working great.  Whatever value I set is the one I get back when I restart my application.  If I delete my config files (C:\Users\"Your_user"\AppData\Local\Autodesk\MB2011\config on Vista and Windows 7), it will default back to 24 fps.  You could try to delete your config files to make sure there is no corruption in it.  Otherwise, we would need more precise steps in order to reproduce it.  Which OS are you working on?
