Hi.
I’m using MB for years and for me it is Godsend software for animator, The Tool where I can do whatever I need for my movies. Including even final renders. (I know, it sound strange, but for some ideas for movies I have, I don’t need much more. http://vimeo.com/788006)
But, I wonder, is there a way to improve OpenGL rendering in MB, without taking characters or scenes to Max or Maya or similar for rendering? Just to render better visuals INSIDE MB, or to simply export, if necessary, complete scene to somewhere else, without retargeting, etc..?
Basically, is there some application independent renderer I can use with MotionBuilder?

Thank you very much.

Hi Animatom,

I’m not aware of any other third-party renderer for MotionBuilder.

The in-built renderer is a hardware renderer that uses the OpenGL display from the Video Card. You can improve the results by using some of the inbuilt shaders and lighting in MotionBuilder (i.e. real-time shadows, toon shader etc) The cameras also supports depth of field and anti-aliasing which can produce really nice results.

The only other current option would be to export FBX to 3ds Max or Maya and use the in-built mental ray software renderer or other renderer.

Best Regards,

Lee

You can write you custom CGFX shader (or ORSDK shader) to improve the rendering quality, depend on yourself programming skill (or studio’s dev resource). We do see some big studios developed their own custom shader inside MB and achieve amazing rendering quality (Like Avatar).
