Hi,

When I drop the actor face to the scene, I cannot find my custom expressions, I don’t know how to get to the custom and the voice channels.

I already checked on the “Active” box, and my blendshapes are set correctly, I even deactivated the “Use MoCap.

THANX.

Hi Hamzannaba,

If you’re working with the Voice Device- I think it’s the order you add and connect the device to the Character Face that makes it work or not. Try the following:-

1. With your Character Face added to scene, go to Asset Browser-Templates-Devices and Alt+Drag the Voice device on top of the Character Face node in navigator view(to connect):-
You should then see relations constraint listed below Character Face, though nothing is connected as yet.
2. From navigator, go to Devices and select Voice to see it’s properties.
3. From Voice window choose Add.
4. From Voice Parameter Selection window select and Ctrl+Select all of the different phonemes you want to use in the device. These should now show as sliders in the Voice Window.
5. From Navigator, select the Character Face and choose Character Definition window-
6. Under Expressions-Custom on the Character Definition tab you should see the new Voice Device phoneme’s added at the bottom when you scroll down. What you need to then do is select each of the Voice Phonemes you have added here(on left) and set how much each of your source Blend Shapes will contribute(from Shapes Mapping % on right pane)

Lee

Hi Lee, You wrote

“1. With your Character Face added to scene, go to Asset Browser-Templates-Devices and Alt+Drag the Voice device on top of the Character Face node in navigator view(to connect):-
You should then see relations constraint listed below Character Face ... “

and this never happens (I have MB 2011 with service pack).
A Relation constraint is added to the Constraints folder but Character Face and Relation contraint remain two separate entities.

Can anyone help me?

Hi,

The voice device woked for me, but, what ‘bout the custom expressions, i can’t get any of them when I drop an actor face to the scene, I’ve watched where there’s two tabs side to side in the actor face, the generic and the custom expressions.

Hi Hamzannaba,

Actor Face asset is used to connect Mo-Cap markers which will drive the Character Face setup(which is similar to regular Actor-Character input on control rig). If you are not working with Mo-Cap for your facial animation you should not need to use Actor Face. The Actor face, when setup with markers will drive the generic channels on the Character Face(if set as input for Character Face)

If you want to work with your custom expressions on the Character Face, and have Actor Face driving the animation, you would need to plot the Actor Face and turn off Actor Face Source from the Character Face-Character Face Animation Window.

Further information on working with Actor Face asset is available in the following section of the MotionBuilder 2009 help documentation:-

MotionBuilder 2009 Help - Animating Faces - Actor Face asset

I’m a total NOOB to MotionBuilder and have been unable to get the Facial Device connection working with the Character Face.

--First I import the FBX file with Shape Blends, Drag the Character Face object to my mesh and ‘attach to model’

--Then I drag the Voice Device (or imported sound file) onto my mesh:: NO ”attach to model” dialogue appears

-- I select the character face in the navigator window and there’s no constraint/ connection to the Voice Device.

Seems like this should be pretty easy from what I’ve read but for some reason I cant get it to work.  ANY HELP would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
-TK

BTW- Using both Maya and Motion Builder 2011....

Hi,

You should test this after installing MotionBuilder 2011 Service Pack 1. Occasionally there are issues that are resolved in the Service pack Releases which may be related to the problem you’re seeing.

Autodesk MotionBuilder 2011 Service Pack 1

AS further suggestion, there are a couple of example scenes setup with Actor Face connected to Character Face that ship with the software. These may have connection already setup between Character Face-Actor Face-Voice Device which you can easily re-use in your own setup scene. The Sample scenes should be installed in-

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Autodesk MotionBuilder 2011 64-bit\Samples\

Best Regards,

Lee
