Hello,

We are trying to use video that we’ve already captured as a back plate in Motionbuilder.  The problem we are having is finding a video format/codec/settings that MB will recognize and render.  We have available ffmpeg/mencoder/x264.

Looking at the MB UI, I think it is using Quicktime to interpret the video, but I am not sure.  I am able to create a format that vanilla Quicktime 7 is able to open, but it doesn’t show up in MB.

Specifics would be really appreciated.

cheers,
eric

Hi Eric,

At a basic level, MotionBuilder supports AVI and Quicktime format a Video nodes for backplate or textures. As you probably know, there are many different codecs you can render to with AVI and Quicktime. Support for these is dependent on what is installed on the system and whether you are running 32-Bit or 64-Bit application.

Note: Although you can install and use 32-Bit video codecs on a 64-Bit operating system- you will not be able to use these codecs within a 64-Bit Application(i.e. MotionBuilder/Maya/3ds Max 64-Bit) The issue with Codecs is compounded due to the fact that many existing standard codecs are not available in 64-Bit versions, this will limit what you are able to import if you are running the 64-Bit version of MotionBuilder. As a workaround, it is possible to install the 32-Bit version of MotionBuilder on 64-Bit operating system if you are using a codec that is only available in 32-Bit.

Note2: As far as I’m aware, Quicktime is currently only available in 32-Bit version- you will not be able to play Quicktime video from within 64-Bit Internet browser, but can use Quicktime within 32-Bit Internet browser on 64-Bit operating system. The situation with MotionBuilder is similar- as Quicktime is only available in 32-Bit, you will need to run the 32-Bit version of MotionBuilder on 64-Bit OS if you need Quicktime. Further information on codec support and Quicktime is available from the link below:-

Rendering to QuickTime MOV format - Unavailable on MotionBuilder 64-Bit

Note, for other AVI codecs, you may be able to find 64-bit codec pack online to provide further support

Best Regards,

Lee

Hi,

Seems like Adobe is able to support it in After Effects CS5

QuickTime is very important and we will continue to have QuickTime support in the next After Effects. It involved extra effort on our part to work around the QuickTime issues, but it’s looking good now.”

Can we hope for something similar for futur releases?

I had the same problem. But as Lee mentioned, The problem solved when I started to work with 32-bit version of MoBu.
