Just to let everyone know you can do all of this in MoBu I just didn’t know about it. Read the post to find out how.

Hi,

I use motionbuilder a lot and love the software but there’s a few things I wish autodesk would fix to make it even better. I didn’t know where to put this so I figure this would be the best place for Autodesk to see my request for the new version.

-Custom Properties being able to go -100 to 100-

Right now when I create a new expression in a characters face I have to make an expression for mouth down and one for up. It would be nice to have a -100 in there so I can combine the two expressions so it has only 1 slider for it.

-Custom Properties having more sub menus-

Right now I have all my facial expressions in one huge menu. It would be nice to be able to add sub menus so I can organize my expression easier. That way I don’t have to look at the 100+ expressions I have all the time.

-Story mode being able to drop custom properties in the Track Content-

I like how you can drop objects in the track content in Story, but now I would like to drop custom properties into it.(face expressions and blendshapes) But of course you would also need to save out custom properties as tracks so you can reuse it later.

-Be able to save poses for anything-

It would be nice to be able to save a pose for anything in the scene and reuse it later. Just like story you drop the content in to a group and then you can create and paste poses for that group.

Hopfully someone from Autodesk reads this :)
Thanks,

you can use custom properties in story if you add them to character extension.

.. sub menus- you should be able to create a custom prop. view so you can filter out what you don’t want to see and it should help some as a current workaround.

* are you talking about custom properties in the “character face” tool or just blendshapes?

You can when you build custom properties set their limits to what ever you want,-100 to 100 .

if your useing the chracter face node, you can go in and edit the custom props. that it creates to have a -value range but I would just build my own and drive them.... but all my custom props. are 0-100 or -100 to 100.

I don’t see where it is limiting me to 1?

Thanks Brad I didn’t know you can adjust those sliders in the character face!!!

I tried creating a new view in the property editor like you said but when I delete some of the custom properties from the character face it wouldn’t save in the view. Do you know whats wrong? I attached a video of it just it case I was doing it wrong.

And for creating character extensions they can’t be driven by the character face at the same time. I would like to store facial poses so I can reuse them and making it a extension allows that but not if its set up as a face. Unless you know a way to active the character face and character extensions on the same bones.

Thanks again you’ve been a great help!

you would not have both on the same bones, you would drag the custom properties from the char face in to the extension.

Hi keo,

If you have subscription support set up for MotionBuilder, you can submit new feature requests by logging a support request with the MotionBuilder support team.

You can also submit a feature request report yourself through the following link on Autodesk.com:-

Autodesk Services & Support - Suggest a Feature

Best Regards,

Lee

OMG Brad you are my Savior!!!!! You can delete all my feature request!!!! Brad just answered them all. I should of asked this a few months back when I started having trouble with it. Character extension and adding property references solved all my problems Thanks Brad!!!!

Sorry Brad now only one more thing that I can’t figure out. Is there a way to paste a pose to only the selected property reference in the character extension? I can only paste in full body.

Thanks again!!!!!!!

Lee,

Thanks for the heads up, I didn’t know about that link.

ok, well it seems to not want to save that view with just custom props. I am asking autodesk about it.

for now.
The best bet then is to just put them all in to folders so you can filter them and organize them.

Here is a quick how to video. (make sure you make the folder under the “character face” as I did in the video or they will not show up.

folders in custom views.

Is there a way to paste a pose to only the selected property reference in the character extension? I can only paste in full body.

You can paste a pose to a selected set of properties via the object they are attached to… check the Mia_Servo tutorial file. The big claw is an extension, and the custom property of the claw is added as well. If you grab full body poses of Mia, you can paste just back to the claw. Just by selecting the object that is holding the property and pasting in body part. In your rig, if you have an object that is holding the specific properties in question, you can paste back onto this object in body part and have it paste to these channels. However make sure the reference object is set… see attached photo…

If you don’t want TRS considered on the object in question, select the character extension, you will see that the channels that are added into the extension are available as Property Refs, simply remove them from the Extension in question in the custom prop/view/ref window.

Hope that is what you were looking for…

Cheers,
Kevin
