This is just a general question about facial motion capture. We currently have facial motion capture (and we need to get it on a head using bones) but im wondering what the best way to map it onto our character is. Do you use motionbuilders tools or set up a custom rig using some form of constraints.

Cheers.

I think Ive found a way by setting constraints (aims and parent/childs). seems to work pretty well.

Both, the actor and character face tools can be used or you can do as you described and build a retarget rig your self through constraints.

It just depends on your requirements and time.

Hi Abedford,

For facial Motion Capture- you can either use the in-built tools in Actor Face/Character Face to connect the marker data –or- use a custom setup with Bones/Constraints as you’ve suggested.

For info on MotionBuilder Actor/Character Face, refer to the Docs and see the links below:-

http://area.autodesk.com/tutorials/actor_face_animation

The following Book has a really good section on Facial Motion Capture describing the process to use in recording marker data for facial animation and connecting to custom rig with constraints:-

MoCap for Artists: Workflow and Techniques for Motion Capture
You should be able to order it on Amazon.

There’s also a number of third-party utilities and plugins that handle this. See below link for video showing NaturalPoint plugin:-

Best Regards,

Lee
