I’ve just upgraded to mobu 09 64bit and have come across a very annoying problem already!. I work for a while on a scene animating as I normally would, then at some point, (I haven’t been able to pinpoint a specific point/action at which it breaks yet) the autokey feature will cease to work even though it shows as red, setkey works, autokey, nope! Restarting the file does not fix the problem, a full restart of motionbuilder is required to carry on where I left off before the problem arose.
Anyone else run into this??

Hi Chris,
haven’t had that issue on my side. But i can see how this can be very annoying.
things to check:
if you are trying to key a character which is tied to a non-animatable character track in the story.(or object/generic animation track)(this happens to me often)
is the keying mode ok? still TR or it could have been switched to ‘current camera’?
ain’t there no device active or something like that?
bye for now

This is still happening! None of those things seem to be the cause, and it’s a pretty basic scene really, no story mode or any special features, just straight animating on layers. Like this morning, sat down started animating, ok, fine, the I went away from my desk fro 5 minutes maybe, sit back down and it’s not keying anymore, just crazy.
And I can be pretty sure it’s not my scene as I can open up any file, say one of motionbuilders tutorial files and autokey refuses to work still.

Hey Chris,
i will try my best to have repro on your problem since i’m not able yet.
can you check if the show hint keys option is still on in the transport controls.
are you saying that leaving your computer idle leads each time to your autokey function malfunctioning?
thanks
bye for now.

I have this issue all the time on Motion Builder 2010 64bit and 32bit. There are no reproducible steps, sometimes it happens after 5 minutes, sometimes after 30 minutes. Only way to fix it is to save then reboot Motion Builder.

I’m getting this as well, had it in Motionbuilder 2010 64bit and now in 2011 64bit and its worse that ever! I’ll be animating fine and its when I scrub the timeslider back and forth that I notice that none of my animation took. The only way I can get Auto Key to work again is to restart Motionbuilder. The tools Im using are rotate, move and align on the BaseAnimation layer.

Everyone using Auto Key in the office has the same problem. MOU 2009 32 an 64 bits.

If you are working with the STORY window, and the autokey doesnt work, this is the solution:
In the “animation layer” window select the base layer, right click and then select “clear animation in layer”
And this it, it works for me
This problem is even in Motionbuilder 2012

I used autokey in max all the time. IMHO MB is unable to produce a correct autokey function. Just one of MANY things that don’t work in this @#$%^
Anyway, here are my notes on autokey (trying to figure out how it actually works as opposed to what the “user guide” claims). Perhaps it may help you:
Using Auto Key:
Does not plant the key on Reach (unless moving the Reach slider).
BodyPart mode plants the key on some bones in the bodypart, not all.
FullBody mode works just like BodyPart (see above).
Conclusion: it appears to be working in Selection keying mode all the time.
