Hi everyone, i work in production for more than 10 years now, I started with 3dMax, than Softimage, than Maya (actually my favourite), and i think that would be nice to have something like diamond modeling tools, but in my opinion is not a priority, and i really think that doesn’t worth putting any effort in mental ray integration. All the big studios doesn’t use it anymore, no one!!! Everyone is oriented in Vray, Arnold, or Renderman, mental ray is the most obsolete and slow ever.
I totally agree for the hypershade restyling, and i really think worth focusing in better dynamics
thanks
E.

i disagree, vray is nice for stills and archvis but its a pain to get rid of GI flicker. Mental ray is far more stable and easier to get fast FG with no flickering, especially with animated geometry. With vray you are pretty much stuck to using brute force on comped objects. If you are a small studio that doesnt have a big renderfarm, vray is actually not the best bet. so i feel that autodesk SHOULD focus on mray and making its passes work like vray and getting instances to work with rgbPP…

well this is no big surprise for me, i have been expecting this.
magazines like 3dartist, 3d world, numerous renowned CG sites have already pointed out numerous times, that modeling (with stone age tools)and rendering (with the mental ray integration whitch is almost a prank) in Maya is just a joke.
Now Autodesk knows that very well, they know better than anyone else what needs to be done to make Maya a “complete” 3d software, its their product, but they just don’t want to do it and i guess they have their reasons for that.Maybe they want studios to buy maya for animation and max for the rest? maybe making an incomplete software like maya makes just more turn over for Autodesk in a way or another? i really don’t know the real reasons but they certainly know what they are doing. Just don’t expect much from Maya when it comes to modeling/rendering.

I agree with you, but then, why this topic has been so successful?
Many people use Maya for modeling and rendering, are left to their fate?

Yes they are,Autodesk don’t care much about the individual end user as much as it do for studios. This is how they make most of their money. I understand your frustration, something Autodesk doesn’t, they just want to make money. What they are doing with the Maya modeling/rendering development is the biggest proof.

Seeing as they have basically no updates to modelling or rendering in the 2013 version, it’s pretty safe to say that Autodesk really don’t give a damn about anything but big studios. Since 2008/2009 there’s been little to none development in this area. I’ve spent two years at school learning all the little quirks and tricks on how to tame this beast. Modelling is the bread and butter of every project and I can’t understand why Autodesk (being one of the biggest software developers in the world) can’t even put one programmer to work on these important feautures. It makes me sad to see.

(Maybe I’ll be better to jump off this sinking ship sooner than later...)

Better to light a candle.  Keep pounding the keyboard.

There are two features in Maya that allow users to report bugs and request features under Maya’s Help drop-down menu:

In Maya
“Help > Report a Problem”
“Help > Suggest a Feature”

Then, there’s this focus page. :)

and you can also write letters for santa btw....
Seriously, people and even studios have been demanding a descent MR integration for years with no results at all.

? what are you talking about???

maya 2013 has mental ray integration completely reimplemented as a plugin, now it should be easier than ever to roll out updates for MR, without the need for autodesk having to integrate new versions. This is a huge update…

I dont care that much about the updates, the only thing that seems okay is the NHair and Node Editor the rest are pointless, the most improvements seem to be in the animation part ( what a shock). The reason 3ds Max is so good is because of plugins cuz they improve every part of Max, for maya there are some good plugins out there that beat anything that Autodesk can make like Shave and Haircut, L-brush,V-ray and they-re also working of Krakatoa for Maya so we have better chances of small companies making plugins for maya rather than Autodesk.
