Hi there…

Sometimes importing a maya expoorted OBJ in another package gives me an error saying: “Different number of vertices and normals”...anyone knows what that means and if there is a way to fix it on the maya side? I thought that every vertice had a normal and i cant really understand how the numbers of vertices and normals can be differrent....Thanks alot.

I would like to know the answer to this question as well. In Massive, I’m getting a warning: “Different number of vertices and normals in ‘shirt.obj’ (542 normals) (145 vertices).” This OBJ was exported from Maya, but I get the same warning when I import it into Blender and export as OBJ; except, with Blender, I’m only 2 normals off; whereas, from Maya, I’m 397 normals off! I even downloaded Blender’s SVN code and looked in their export_obj.py, but I haven’t figured out why this is happening yet. It’s so annoying!

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten that error, but from the way it sounds, it could be “Lamina Faces”.  Sometimes you’ll have two faces sharing all edges and all vertices, which could give you a double set of faces and a double set of normals.  Try selecting your model and click on “Mesh-Cleanup” and scroll down to the “Remove Geometry” section.  Click on “Lamina Faces”.  You might try “Faces with Zero Geometry Area” also.

Be aware that this is a destructive process that cannot be reversed - you should make sure your file is backed up before you try it.

As I said, this is a guess - I’ve never had that problem before.

I looked up online for a solution to this problem, which I faced while importing the obj’s into Massive, but nothing.

Is there a workaround for this ? It seems like it is the objExport plugin in Maya which is not generating the right information as expected by Massive.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.
