I’ve gone through almost all of the older FBX converters, and the only one that actually functions properly (the surfaces of the object are preserved correctly), is the 2009.3.

2012.1 totally destroys the vertex normals, and all of the 2010 and 2011 versions have surface issues.  Some versions partially kill the vertex normals, very strange.

What is the method to address these problems and give feedback to Autodesk?

I really can’t use 2009.3 as it takes 35 seconds to convert an OBJ as opposed to just a few seconds for 2012.1.

thanks!

Hello mbWannabe!

I’ve tried to duplicate your problem with different polygonal meshes and have not been able to.  I’ve been using version 2012.2 of the FBX Coverter.  I would suggest two things. First, download the latest version of the tool and see if you have the same problems. If you do, could you then please attach and example of a .obj that you have problems with?  That way we can try and duplicate your problems and hopefully find a solution.

Cheers!
Carlos

I sent in a bug report to Autodesk’s FBK tech support when I discovered this.

YES - they did fix it in 2012.2, the normals seem to be there now (2012.1 had the bug, which started after 2009.3)

This is really great that AD actually reads these bug reports, I’m very encouraged and happy with AD!!!

I’m converting OBJ to FBX to DAE using FBXConverter 2012.2. The DAE fails because three meshes have one vertex with an index number greater than the length of the vertices. Same index number 950 (only 785 vertices). Converting to ascii FBX I can see where the 950 comes from: after the mesh vertices there’s

PolygonVertexIndex: *6 {
a: 950,554,0,2,1,-785
}

I don’t know what this means, but it’s the only 950 in the file. Sure would be nice if this worked - we have thousands of files to convert.

Hi DaveDixon,

I asked our principal dev about your problem, and he asked that you do the same workflow with a simple cube.  The reason is to eliminate the possibility that your geometry is not corrupted somewhow, or perhaps non conformed.

Please let us know your results.

Regards,
Carlos

I sent in a bug report on this page for FBX

They did fix my problem in the next release, so document it and send them sample to reproduce the problem.
