Hi, I have this cylinder (purple) that I want to cut into this smooth curved sheet.

I have thought about booleans but I don’t understand why the stack closes and how to smooth the new sharp edges created when i do it.

How would you go about it?

The aim is to create a cylindrical opening in the sheet while maintaing the smoothing, while getting the edges themselves smoothed.

My stack is EditPoly, TurboSmooth, Bend, Box.

Pro Boolean seems to get rid of some of my swift loops :S

Can you afford to colapse the stack first? ("Convert to Editable Poly")
(make a copy at the current state and then hide it if you need to.)
ps. don’t hit refresh after making a post...you get another one.

Use the “No Edge Removal” option within Pro Boolean so that it does not get rid of your edge loops.

Ye sorry bout that. I have increased the iterations and used a normal boolean. It seems to work well, but i’m left with this

So now select the edge around the hole and chamfer it (sides = 4 (or more to taste))...after once again colapsing the stack, if need be.

If you choose to start over, or for future reference - here is another method.  It is not “perfect” but it looks good.

3ds Max 2013, Maya 2013
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
Core i7, 12GB RAM
Nvidia Quadro FX 3700 (Driver 267.17)

It’s hard to tell from the video, but this is what the end result looks like using this method…
