I'm testing 3ds max design 2013 and have a simple scene (newly created in 2013 not from 2012) with a box room and 2 window openings in walls. Daylight system added and 2 mr sky portals on exterior of windows (arrows pointing in), mr photo exposure set to 10 (interior daylight scene). Using Mental Ray renderer and everything renders, light gets into room ok etc it's just that I can't get the mr sky environment map to be seen through the window openings. I'm doing exactly as i did in 2012 version by changing the mr sky portal transparency from white to grey - which worked before but now it doesn't. Window stays either white or black depending on how I alter the transparency colour. Thanks in advance for any comments. The spike platform I made is just a rectangle box with a bunch of cones coming off of it that simulate spikes. I attached all the spikes to each other in one editable poly, attached the cones to the rectangle, and then detached the rectangle to element because the materials got screwed up when I attached the two. I want to copy the spike trap to several places in my room, so that's why I attached them. If I shouldn't have let me know, but in any scenario my problem is with rendering anyways. The how-to video showed using displacement, bumps, normals, and a diffusion from a substance map. At first I used all of those at once on my rectangle but it kept crashing so I shortened it to just a normal and diffuse from the substance. The spikes just have a plain black material color on them, and I isolated 1 trap in the selection. Every time I render [i][/i]just[i][/i] this much, it crashes. I have 4 GB of memory, so I should think that would be okay. When I render it with the default renderer without changing anything, it just shows a black screen with nothing on it. So I switched it to "3dsmax.scanline.no.advanced.lightning.draft" and then it either sometimes shows a really really distorted, low quality version of the selection or just crashes. I'm very confused, does anyone have any ideas? Let me know if you want screenshots of the material slate, the scene, or anything else. Thank you for your time. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I must ask, if there is anyone from AD reading this, is there a chance of your developers taking a more open approach in the way Max handles content from software such as ZBrush? To be a bit more specific, I have been having difficulty getting vector displacement maps from ZBrush to render properly in Mental Ray using the "Vector Displacement" and "SSS Fast Skin + Displacement" shaders in Max. Having pretty much exhausted every possible configuration in order to get an accurate result I have come to the conclusion that Max currently is probably designed only to use VDM's from Mudbox. I would have thought the situation would improve with Max 2013 and Mental Ray 3.10 but unfortunately there has been no change in this respect. I assume there was at one stage some sort of dialogue between Autodesk and Pixologic regarding the "GoZ" function so I can't understand why there has been little progress made since then. Now that ZBrush is becoming more the industry standard for 3D sculpting and concept design (I know Mudbox has it's strengths too) I can only see that it would be in Autodesk's best interest to be more compatible. Please AD make a move to provide better interoperability between these two great applications. All we really need for this to work is an upgrade to the above mentioned shaders in order to make Mental Ray work properly with ZBrush vector displacement maps. Thanks for your time. 2012-05-12T07:39:26+02:00 strange black spot http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/lighting---rendering/strange-black-spot/page-last/ http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-3ds-max/lighting---rendering/strange-black-spot/page-last/#When:07:44:41Z hello everyone I work on my projects recently, it's about to demonstrate constructing method to my company's client, I use 3ds max 2012 (64-bit) to animate the procedure, the animation is a sequential targa files, after the rendering completed , I checked out every single image , found some of them have strange black spot, so I just re-rendered the strange black spot image file (only the each single frame one at a time), the black spot gone, shown as 01 and 02 , the render setting shown as 03,04 and 05 , here I explain my scene setting a little more detail , because my camera moving along path , so I set project points from positions along camera path , interpolate over number fg points set to 100 (the preset is 30), no caculate gi since it's an outside scene , and not reuse fg and gi , filter type set to mitchell and bucket to 128 (the preset is box and 48) , and I just use arch_design and autodesk material library to assign object , and simple pf to simulate welding effect plus glow and glare shader , the scene is about 6 million polys and verts, but fps still about 80 (shown as 06), my machine is i7-2600, 16 gigabyte ram , quadro 2000, win 7 (64-bit), and only single machine do the rendering session (no net or distributed rendering). Because the strange black spot is square , looks like the mental ray can't caulate the fg points correctly, I supposed my render setting about bucket is too high , so I set back to 96 to render the animation is targa sequence again (shown as 07) , 3ds max still gave me the black spot in different frames(shown as 08) , but as long as I re-render those images each one at a time , the black spot disappeared , it's only the solution I can figure out now , does anyone have the same experience ?? what's going on in 3ds max or mental ray?? and how to solve the issue?? please help me, thanks in advance. 2012-05-11T07:44:41+02:00 Object renders black at higher FG settings. The objects looks fine on draft renderings and even on diffuse render elements at the higher FG settings looks correct. The material is a multi-subobject material with Mental ray materials. Rendering with Mental Ray in 3dsmax 2013. I attached the results I got. The objects with issues are the small bottles on the middle table and on the second from bottom shelf. The object is created with lathe modifier applied to a spline. Same method of creation and material is used on the larger bottles.
