just saw the video titled “small annoying things” and went like.. wtf? How about a reality check: max 2012 is still unusable for animation, the core system is still broken. In case you guys forgot max 2012 dropped timeline performance by another whopping 10% in d3d mode and 90%+ in nitrous mode. Scenes that run fine in max 9 - 2011 are a freaking slide show in 2012. An ad rep told me last year that fixing viewport performance was one of your top priorities, whatever happened to that? I will not be buying an “upgrade” that i cant use again.

feel yo pain.

have u tried this possible NITROUS lag fix…

http://area.autodesk.com/for...ag-with-nitrous-miracle-/

seems to be helping some… definitely helped in my case, and I have been BITCHING for a year… the fix was stumbled upon by kcpr raffaEl.  try it ans see if it helps ya?  u can always uninstall the video drivers and do clean install if need be...or if you prefer not too...i guess you may never know.

overall, yes, max seems to be somewhat of an old dog in ways, but really, it’s got a lot of good things going for it also (and it’s future I feel more so then the rest)… its defintialy a LOVE / HATE relationship...seems more a HATE on your end...which is somewhat mine also, but some days, its a LOVE.  Those days never fall on a MONDAY btw.

Are you still using the same hardware as you were from max 9? That could be the problem. My performance went Up with the switch to Nitrous. It’s designed around new hardware though.

When using Nitrous make sure to disable progressive rendering in all viewports (through the viewport configuration controls). This can lead to some of the performance issues. I would be interested to know if that helps with your timeline issue, or not.

is it even “typical” to even edit etc super high poly single objects in max 2012?  i.e. single object with say 5 million+ polys?  I mean straight up polys, not a managable object with 3 or so iterations of Turbosmooth applied.  MAx seems much more efficient this way vs straight raw polys.

I am just wondering if people are expecting way tooooo much from 3ds trying to edit single objects with more than 3 million polys at least?  I understand that Mudbox and Zbrush work just fine in realtime on my machine even with 10 million+ poly single objects...but that software is MEANT to do that...I don;t think max ever was was it?  I don;t know how true Max v9 was ever able to with no problem or what?  seems many claim max v9 was the last that was the fastest and worked the best?  but did it in fact compared to v2012 blow it away with super high poly editing and navigation?  or are just people really expecting way to much from v2012????

I am not a big high poly person with what I do...so don;t know...but the smaller stuff i do, that initial half second lag really slowd me down while working...so glad the CUDA 4.1 driver helped me in my situation.  I don’t see that helping others working with 3 million plus poly single objects though.

What!? I just spent 10 minutes writing my comment only to find it didn’t get posted. Anyway.
No one expects to directly manipulate 3 mil polys. However, I expect at least a working product - No initial lag when navigating with the mouse under Nitrous display mode, no marquee lag when FPS drops, working Xref system, no line artifacts (disappearing and badly shaded lines), the list goes on and on…

yeah...isnt that a BITCH!!  type up a huge response, hit SUBMOT, and wabamm!  “regenerating page” or some crap and GONE!

I’ve been having to make the copy and paste habit in case now...real pain...but oh well… seems the AREA website works similar to 3ds max! haha!

yeah, something is definitly wrong in your setup liek some of the others with that rediculous lag you speak of.  I donlt have that type of lag, but that is not good.  hope u get it sorted out (one day i guess?) : /

If you get the “regenerating page” hit back in your browser and press the “Reply To This Comment” button. It should contain everything you typed before hitting submit. Quickly hit submit as it appears the “regenerating page” is related to the amount of time you spend on the page before submitting, or something like that.

EDIT: Just happened to me.

The AREA problems or the 3ds Max related problems?

Haha! I hope the AREA problems… I think that is what he meant? (I hope!)

This regenerating page thing just started recently this week I think.
The double posting problem was annoying, but this tops it.  But your correct pixel monkey about how to get back what u thought u lost.  But still already in the copy and paste habit now.
