I don’t think iray is what everyone is looking for. It is not intended to render animations. It is meant to be used to render, and I stress, “Still” images with the advantage of having live updates to lighting and materials before you render an image within iray. What I want out of Mental ray is an interactive preview window, and iray is not it.

The HUGE advantage of iray is hardware-accelerated, physically correct rendering without the need for any “cheats” such as GI photons or final gathering. If you want interactive rendering, I think you’d be better with V-Ray RT.

Iray looks like it would be a game changer for a lot of people for sure. I personally love Mental ray and will still dream of a “Vray RT” type of preview for Mental ray. I’m sure it will happen at some point.

maybe try Shaderlight?

I am glad 3ds has went in the right direction with QuickSilver.  No matter what they do, people will complain about anything… why don’t we look at this important step of Quicksilver? Can’t wait to put this to use.... wonder if it will be possible to have multiple GPUs, i.e. (3) Nvidia cards in SLI and all working together with the CPU to render so match faster.

Is there any other 3d software besides 3ds max 2011 that does this yet?  I haven’t a clue, maybe? but being a avid user of 3ds… I am very happy it is. Will Maya 2011 have this??? i didn’t see anything on this...and if NOT..that will be even more a PLUS for 3ds...since everybody else and their brother uses Maya… I see some envy happening.

Exactly, not everyone uses Max for animations, so iray has a place for people doing lighting studies who want more interactivity and also physically correct results (archviz). Being able to see the final lighting solution in close to RT without going through photon emitting / FG phases is very helpful for making lighting adjustments.

Can Autodesk post a Quicksilver demo video? It would answer a lot of questions. My understanding is that it isn’t simply an interactive viewport, it’s a new rendering engine that utilizes the vidcard GPU, which will be a helpful addition to 3dsmax for product designers who need to get a better final rendering in less time.

I am not saying that iray is not needed, wanted or great for product designers and archviz. What I have read on other forums and in this thread are people talking about quicksilver and iray in the same sentence. That is what got me to post. You are right that I look for tools to help me in animations and that iray would do nothing for me as I would have to in the end use Mental ray to render. I think that Quicksilver will be used just like the animation make preview in max, but it is now an internal render using all the view port tech such as ambient occlusion, depth of field, view port shadows, hardware shaded materials.... It is in essence a play blast on crack.

That’s my understanding too.  I have no clue why anybody would misinterpret this?

some people get confused :)

Quicksilver is apart from my favorite clothing brand:) a great new beginning :)
Lets see what is there for us and tell them what we think so they can make it better for us.

Unfortunately forgot where it was...but I was reading something about ‘Adding Scene Elements using the Vegetation Library’ in 2011.

Can anyone direct me to where I might be able to find more information/details on it?

Is the Vegetation Library designed as a plug in?  Or will it be included with the release that ships?

I believe this is referring to the already existing 100 tree library available from Autodesk here. They come in .max, .mb, and the native .xfr Xfrog format.
