VP 2.0 support for things like custom locators, custom shapes, custom manips, custom shaders, etc... is being investigated and will hopefully be implemented in the future. We are aware that these things are important. Stay tuned :)

my previous custom shape plugin written for the old viewport wouldn't render in the new viewport. I didn't see much mentioning about support in the new viewport in the API doc, any suggestions on where to start adapting my code ? Thanks !

oswaldo conejo - you can get to a "back" view from any panel by going to View->PredefinedBookmarks->Back

More than a comment, I want to ask for help.
I am looking for this tutorial " Adding a new Camera to Reference Additional Images ".
I'm new in Maya and I 'm trying to learn how use it. I got a very nice tutorial but in this it didn't said how to set up the back view of the car in the front panel. Please help me, I'm stuck in this little inconvenience. I will be so gratefully if you can help me with this matter.
Thank you very much in advance I will appreciate your help!!!!

hmm.. installed maya2011 to try out this vieport 2.0.. after a few mins.. the viewport basiaclly rendered black..and I couldnt get it back to see the lights.. and in general.. the whole noew 2011 interface seems quirky it.. glitches and flashes alot on my machine..so looking like a graphics driver deal..even tough i hav 2x Quadro4600 graphics cards.. my issue must be the fact that I am runnin winXP64.. so i guess its time to bite the bullet.. and buy windows 7 (reinstall everythign from scratch ) just so i can work in maya2011 without graphic glitches.. ( I liked the initial idea of new maya QT interface..but in reality it would be good to be able to choose to use it or not)

Sorry for the delayed responses...
Naqoyqatsi - this iteration of the viewport is not really designed for sculpting performance or modeling in general so you won't notice a lot of performance improvements there. It's geared more toward navigating and working with large scenes containing many objects.
loop1ng - this feature is not really related to the things you mention for max
HamburgerTrain - yes we are investigating adding support for custom shaders. I'm not able to comment on any time-frame though.
n8skow - no this is not related to the Read at Dawn game editor stuff that I'm assuming you're referring to.
Deranged - the VP 2.0 in Maya and the Quick Silver renderer in Max are based on similar technology. They are currently targeted towards different issues though.
duttyfoot - Mental Ray shaders are not currently supported but we are investigating this for potential future development
s03241 - yes you would use the new vp 2.0 mainly for heavy scenes with lots of objects and textures. you'd still use the HQ viewport for display of smaller groups or individual objects with things like multiple UV sets, layered textures, etc...

Still no mental mill support ( xmsl ) ? and no soft shadow ? no post effect ? I was hoping to have the same features as max 2010 for this release .......

Thank you for finally upgrading the viewport rendering. Unfortunately we use mental ray shaders for pretty much everything. So can we please see MR shader previewing for future versions?

I don't think this will take off until 3rd party shaders are supported. Hopefully with a Service Pack not 2012 or 2013 :)
But good nonetheless look forward to it.

How is this compared to the new MAX viewport? I suppose this one does not take advantage of the GPU as much as the Quicksilver hardware renderer?
